COUNTRY HEALTH FEATURE: ARMENIA

If you are of Armenian decent and have never visited your homeland or your roots are from somewhere else and you are just looking for an interesting place to visit, you owe it to yourself to put this little jewel of a country at the top of your list. There may be no country on earth with more history, richer traditions or that is more loved by the people who live there and those living elsewhere, but who continue to call her home. If you enjoy warm and genuine hospitality combined with some friendly and well meaning "advice" then your search for your next destination is over, Armenia is the place you want to be. Great food too!

Armenia lies in the highlands surrounding the Biblical mountains of Ararat, upon which, according to Judeo Christian history, Noah's Ark came to rest after the flood. (Gen.8:4) It is also the first country to adopt Christianity as its state religion, in 301 AD, but you don't have to be Christian to appreciate the wonder of the ancient churches built into, on top of and beside some of the most ruggedly beautiful mountains you've ever seen. The contrast between these ancient structures, sprinkled among the magnificent modern architecture of Armenia's "new" cities, will take your breath away at first...until it dawns on you that this contrast between old and new, rich and poor, sophisticated and ordinary is exactly what Armenia is and what makes it so interesting. We have our own reasons for choosing Armenia as our first featured country and chief among them is she faces some unique health challenges and with a population made up almost entirely of Armenians it makes them easier to understand. We have fallen in love with this little land locked country and her passionate people with their "Big Brains" and even "Bigger Hearts...and if you decide to visit her there is no doubt in our minds you will fall in love with her too...

HEALTH PROFILE REVIEW

Armenia has improved from #1 in the world in
Breast Cancer Death Rate to #4.

In a land of contrasts...nothing stands out more than the health of Armenia's people compared to what it should be. It's not the kind of problem a visitor needs to concern themselves with because there is no shortage of highly qualified physicians. Individual healthcare is arguably very good. It's the "System" that needs to improve and that's not just our opinion. According to the World Health Organization, "the system is underdeveloped, poorly coordinated and it lacks a strategic framework." Our opinions are based on statistical outcomes compiled by the WHO, The World Bank and others, a review of reputable studies and where possible a review of the country's own data, including public statements made by the country about the condition of its health. We are pleased to report that since our last report the health of Armenia has improved!

Armenia No Longer Leads the World In Breast Cancer:

Congratulations to the women of Armenia...According to the latest World Health Organization data published in April of 2011, Armenia has gone from #1 to #4 in Breast Cancer death rate. The country now ranks #11 in Coronary Heart Disease up from #4, gone from #6 to #49 in Stroke, from #4 to #5 in Lung Cancer Death Rate, the only serious increase is Diabetes from #15 to #11 (See Chart Below). The most reliable source of global health data is the World Health Organization because it is standardized for cross cultural comparisons. They also conduct an in-depth review with each country prior to publishing it. One of the purposes of worldlifeexpectancy.com is to access the latest WHO data, organize it and display it in ways that make it easier to use and understand. We think you'll find the Health Index Comparison Tool particularly informative. It allows you to compare Armenia's data, for 50 causes of death, to any country in the world.
