Unimproved sanitation refers to situations where people do not have access to proper toilet facilities. This includes toilets that flush but are not connected to a safe system, simple pit latrines without a slab or just open holes, bucket toilets, hanging toilets, and makeshift setups. It also includes shared toilets of any kind or having no toilet at all—where people have to use the bush or open fields. These conditions can lead to serious health problems and increase the risk of disease.
